Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States[1]; globally, it is the most widely cultivated, trafficked, and abused illicit drug,[2] and it has the longest recorded history of human use. As early as 5,000 years ago, early Chinese texts documented the medicinal benefits of Cannabis sativa extracts unrelated to its psychoactive properties, including alleviation of pain and cramps.[3,4]Cannabis was also familiar in the Old World (eg, ancient Greece, Rome, the Middle East, North Africa) and its use gradually spread to the New World (Western Hemisphere, including the Americas).
